THE HAKONE STAY GUIDE · 05

One night in Hakone, at your pace

Start with the evening you want, then work backwards from dinner and check-in. These flexible plans leave room for the ryokan itself. Choose one, open its area on the map, and build a shortlist.

ONE NIGHT, THREE WAYS

Choose your pace

The stay is the occasion

Choose Yumoto or Tonosawa as a starting point. Keep the first day light so the bath, dinner and a slow morning get their own space.

Day 1 · Arrive, then settle in

  1. Reach Hakone-Yumoto; have lunch or a short look around the station area.
  2. Take the property’s recorded walk, bus or shuttle route; arrive for your chosen check-in and dinner plan.
  3. Leave the evening for a bath and the meal you booked.

Day 2 · One outing, then onward

  1. Enjoy breakfast if included, then collect your bags or confirm storage.
  2. Choose one outing along your return route; keep room for the train connection.

Make the arrival part of the holiday

From Shinjuku, the Romancecar gives you a direct journey to Hakone-Yumoto. From another part of Tokyo or onward from western Japan, compare the operator’s route guidance for your starting point before committing to a train.

Your first useful deadline is at the hotel: check-in, pickup and dinner. Leave space for lunch and a missed connection instead of scheduling an attraction in every gap.

Decide where the suitcase spends the day

For a day with several transfers, ask the property about storage or check the Hakone-Yumoto luggage delivery service’s current participating hotels and acceptance times. Do this before building a route that depends on leaving your bags behind.

Keeping the second day to one side of Hakone can make luggage collection easier. A smaller plan that you can enjoy is better than a circuit that rushes you back through the same transfers.

Review your shortlisted stays

Give the plan a cloudy-day version

For the mountain-and-lake option, check the operator’s live service information before leaving the hotel. If a ropeway or boat is suspended, build a new route from the services that are running; do not assume a replacement connection.

Keep an indoor stop or more time at the ryokan as an alternative. Museum opening days and any special closures need their own check; a rainy-day alternative is not a guarantee that a particular attraction is open.

Plan the transport details

Choose tickets for the route you will take

Compare the current Hakone passes with your actual route and starting station. Check included transport, ticket validity and any additional limited-express charge. A pass is a decision about your itinerary, not an automatic saving for every overnight stay.

Then return to the stay: choose the exact room and meal plan, enter dates and guests in the booking panel, and continue to the booking partner for current availability and the final total.
